Acceptable Documents to Complete the Form I-9
Acceptable I‑9 Documents to complete Section 2, the employee must present:
EITHER:
One document from List A (proves both identity and work authorization):
- U.S. Passport or Passport Card
- Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
- Employment Authorization Document with photo
- Foreign Passport with valid Form I‑94
- Passport from Micronesia or the Marshall Islands with Form I‑94
OR:
One document from List B (identity)
AND
One document from List C (employment authorization)
List B – Identity Documents:
- Driver’s license or state-issued ID with photo
- School ID with photo
- Voter registration card
- U.S. military ID or dependent ID
- Native American tribal document
List C – Employment Authorization Documents:
- Social Security card (unrestricted)
- U.S. birth certificate (certified copy)
- Certification of birth abroad (Form FS-545 or DS-1350)
- U.S. citizen ID card (Form I-197)
- DHS-issued employment authorization (not listed under List A)
All documents must be unexpired and original. Photocopies are not accepted.
